About Mosaik Zellige
Mosaik tile also known as Zellidj, Zillij, Zellij, Zellige
The
Meaning of Mosaik and Zillij
In Arabic countries, the Moorish spread a distinctive decorative Islamic art style called zillij.
Intricate hand cut detailed parts of earthenware tiles of various shapes and colors sometimes covered with enamel, that are laid in complex geometrical patterns worked by hand to allow them to tessellate (fit together perfectly to cover a surface) to give an exuberant richness to pavements, walls, fountains, mosques and palaces walls.
This technique is still passed down from generation to generation by master
artisans or ";Maallem".
Our Moroccan mosaic table tops are authentic, handmade in Morocco by skilled Moroccan Zellige craftsmen.
Each table top is unique in it's design, style and mixture of colors with intricate traditional geometric patterns that is commonly seen throughout the Imperial cities of Morocco and North Africa, indoor and outdoor.
Zellije is the most typical Moroccan form of Art and
the traditional Moroccan craft for mosaic tile work.
